Historic 14th-century inn with river views in Dartmouth town centre

Dining & Culinary Experience

The on-site restaurant offers an innovative menu crafted by a renowned head chef, featuring seasonal dishes made with local ingredients. Guests can choose from two restaurants, including a ground-floor cafe, bar, and dining area that serves drinks and snacks throughout the day. The establishment has received regular recognition for its culinary excellence, with a particular emphasis on accommodating special dietary needs through flexible menu options.

Pet-Friendly Accommodations

The hotel maintains dedicated pet-friendly policies that include specific amenities such as pet baskets, pet bowls, and a welcome pack for dogs upon arrival. Dogs receive a sausage at breakfast as part of the pet-friendly service, and the property provides dog beds, towels, treats, and even toys like tennis balls. These pet-specific services are designed to make stays comfortable for both guests and their animals, with the hotel routinely accommodating multiple well-behaved dogs on the premises.

Rooms & Suites

Each of the seven ensuite bedrooms is named after famous seafarers, offering a unique thematic design that reflects the maritime history of the building. Some rooms, such as the Nelson Suite on the top floor, provide partial views of Bayards Cove and the River Dart from windows facing the front of the hotel. All accommodations are furnished with quality linens, thick curtains, and a super king-size bed options, plus a welcome tray with locally sourced soaps and toiletries.

Location & Local Access

The inn sits on the edge of Bayards Cove in central Dartmouth, directly adjacent to the car ferry that operates until 11 pm for easy river crossings. Guests can walk to Dartmouth Castle, the Britannia Royal Naval College, and the South West Coast Path for scenic coastal walks. This central position places guests within a short distance of the town's shopping areas, boat trips, and the steam railway.

Services & Guest Amenities

The hotel provides a daily housekeeping service, express check-in and check-out options, and luggage storage for guests arriving early or departing late. Safety is maintained through CCTV monitoring in common areas and a safety deposit box for valuables, alongside 24-hour non-smoking policies throughout the property. A complimentary gift bag with local fudge and spring water is given to guests upon checkout, and the front counter sells gluten-free chocolate brownies recommended by past visitors.

“The historic inn enjoys a prime spot, putting guests within easy reach of Dartmouth's charms. I was particularly drawn to the pet-friendly ethos; it's a refreshing touch, and the focus on local, seasonal cuisine signals a commitment to quality that extends beyond just the menu. I think this property stands out for its blend of heritage and genuinely attentive service.”

Fantastic Anniversary Getaway

warm welcome delicious meal homemade fudge
The staff offered warm welcome on arrival, even late at night. We enjoyed a delicious meal after we checked in. The next morning featured a breakfast with high quality products. Upon checking out, we received a gift bag. It contained water and some homemade fudge.
The room decor included marine themes and cosy lighting, which I loved. the room was a bit small. The space was limited. I think future guests may want a larger room option. It was not a terrible experience, but something to note.
